The 5 Mental Disciplines of a Champion

The 5 Mental Disciplines of a Champion

1. Intelligence

2. Reaction

3. Confidence

4. Determination

5. Mental Agility

6. Concentration

1. Intelligence

We train our students to use their intelligence, to outwit their opponents using reasoned thought, never allowing their emotions to get the better of them.  The means reading your opponent and adapting techniques and tactics accordingly.  We train students to visualise their goals and how they would achieve them.

2. Reaction

We train our students to increase their ability to react positively to situations and quickly decide the best course of action.  We also teach students to hone their intuitive recognition.  A switched off student could get ambushed on the street, so learning to fine tune the senses and be ready for action when needed is a very useful state for students to learn to achieve.

3. Confidence

Emotions are like chariot horses, we teach students to steer them, control them – they will either lead to victory or defeat.  In a street confrontation it is very easy for the novice to lose their energy and will because they are unable to process the information and contain their emotional response to threat or danger.  Fight or flight is a natural process, but martial arts training helps students to recognise which is important and how to cope under pressure.

4. Determination

We teach student to be stubborn, to continue to practice until they “get it”.  Many people enter training believing they are better than they actually are, Sensei Youtube may make them believe they are a ninja but in 99% of cases their technique is as good a wet paper bag.  Only through persistent practice and rigorous training will any student achieve the ability they may see online.

5. Concentration

We teach focus and concentration in class through hiding repetition in all of our drills.  The human mind can easily become bored and sometimes monotonous repetition of techniques in isolation can lead to boredom.  Therefore by hiding repetition in fun and exciting drills we aim to keep everyone smiling, sweating and learning!

Tring Martial Arts Academy was founded in July 2005 and with 55 classes every week we have a time/class to suit almost everyone.  Find out more at www.tringmartialarts.com
