Anger is a normal and useful emotion. It can tell children when things are not fair or right. But anger can become a problem if a child’s angry behaviour becomes out of control or aggressive.
Why is your child so angry?
There are lots of reasons why your child may seem more angry than other children, including:
- seeing other family members arguing or being angry with each other
- friendship problems
- being bullied – the Anti-Bullying Alliance has information on bullying
- struggling with schoolwork or exams
- feeling incredibly stressed, anxious or fearful about something
- coping with hormone changes during puberty
- It may not be obvious to you or your child why they’re feeling angry. If that’s the case, it’s important to help them work out what might be causing their anger.
At Tring Martial Arts Academy we believe the best way to start to deal with anger issues is a good physical workout. There is simply nothing better than 45 minutes of structured exercise where everyone is working towards a similar goal AND are learning reality based self defence which is a life skill everyone needs.
Typically, after a good workout, everything seems different.
Imagine for a moment that you could bottle the stress and the causes of your stress into a bottle. Now it could be a rather large bottle but imagine for one moment that this might be possible.
Imagine now how heavy that bottle feels, there is a lot of weight in here. Set the bottle to one side and take some exercise, I guarantee that when you pick up that bottle of stress after your workout it will feel less heavy.
This is very much like taking a class at Tring Martial Arts Academy, you enter into the dojo and bow onto the mat. We teach our members that when you enter you leave your stress (or bottle of stress) at the door. When you bow onto the mat, you are signalling to yourself that you have left your every day life behind and that for these 45 minutes you are training 100%. We love the phrase, Wherever You Are, Be There!
By learning to be present and in the moment, students build their ability to focus and to concentrate which is extremely difficult to do when you are angry. After their 45 minutes of training they feel immediate relief from stress and the anxiety that can come with it. They are able to better cope with life.
