As a woman training in martial arts, I know first hand how challenging it can be to manage your period while still wanting to train at your best. One of the biggest concerns many of us face is what to wear under our white martial arts trousers during that time of the month. We want to feel comfortable, protected and confident, without worrying about visibility or leaks. Over the years, I’ve tried different options and spoken with other female martial artists to find what works best. I hope this helps you feel more at ease when training during your period.
Finding the Right Protection
The most important factor when deciding what to wear is choosing the right level of protection for your flow. There are several options available, each with its own benefits:
- Period Underwear: These have been a game-changer for me. Designed to absorb menstrual flow, they feel just like normal underwear but provide extra protection. Many brands offer styles with high absorbency that can be worn alone or as a backup with other period products.
- Menstrual Cups or Discs: Some women prefer using a menstrual cup or disc because they provide long-lasting protection without the bulk of pads. They can be particularly useful during intense training sessions, as they stay in place and reduce the risk of leaks.
- Tampons: A classic choice, tampons can be effective, especially when paired with period underwear or black compression shorts for added security. Don’t forget if you need to resupply we keep free tampons in the bathroom cabinet of the female toilet, help yourself.
- Pads: While pads offer great absorption, they can sometimes shift during movement, which can be a concern when wearing white trousers. If you prefer pads, opt for ultra-thin designs with wings and secure them well to prevent bunching or slipping.
Choosing the Right Base Layer
Even with the best period products, we often worry about visibility under white trousers. Here are a few tried-and-tested solutions:
- Nude-Coloured or White Compression Shorts: These provide a smooth and secure fit while offering extra coverage. Compression shorts can also help hold pads in place and add an extra layer of confidence.
- Seamless Nude or White Briefs: If you prefer something lighter, seamless underwear in a nude or white shade blends well and reduces visible lines under your uniform.
- Black Underlayers for Added Confidence: black shorts or leggings under your gi trousers can be a great way to feel secure.
Mindset and Confidence
I completely understand the anxiety that can come with training while on your period. We often worry about leaks or feeling uncomfortable, but I want to reassure you that it’s completely normal to train during this time. Many of us have been there and with the right preparation, you can feel confident and focus on your training rather than your period.
If you’re feeling particularly uncomfortable, it’s okay to take it easy or adjust your training intensity. Listen to your body and do what feels right for you.
